DTH player Tata Sky Ltd, the joint venture between the Tata group and Star, has launched its high definition (HD) service at a price of Rs 2,599.

Tata Sky's entry into this fledgling market for HD services is bound to shake up the market considering that other DTH players have already entered the market with much higher prices. While Sun Direct HD service is currently priced at Rs 9,990, according to the price on its Web site, Reliance Big is priced at Rs 7,490 while Dish TV's HD service, recently launched, is being offered at Rs 5,999.

Asked about Tata Sky's aggressive pricing for its entry into HD services, Mr Vikram Mehra, Chief Marketing Officer, Tata Sky, says that the market for HD services needs an “evangelist” to popularise the service that offers high picture quality.

“Anybody who bought a TV in the past three years is bound to have bought a HD-ready set. The TV makers are waiting for HD set-top boxes and for HD content. We decided that if the numbers come, more content will follow.”

The service will be launched with the movie Kites being shown exclusively on Tata Sky in HD format. Mr Mehra expects Bollywood, sports and channels such as National Geographic and Discovery HD to drive viewers to the HD format for a superior viewing experience.

Mr Mehra said the imported HD boxes will be subsidised by Tata Sky, as do most other DTH players, but says this is necessary to drive the market.

“Aggressive pricing and Bollywood magic, we expect, will do the trick of pushing HD numbers,” he says. The Tata Sky HD offering will soon include many more channels such as Star Plus HD, Star Movies HD and popular sports channels.


As part of the launch phase, all existing Tata Sky subscribers can now upgrade to Tata Sky HD and avail themselves of the HD Gold Pack for an entire year while all new Tata Sky HD subscribers would be offered free the HD Gold pack for the first two months.

Subscribers cannot trade in their old set-top boxes but, as Mr Mehra says, can use it for a second TV, for which subscribers can avail themselves of an additional connection for a flat Rs 150 extra.

Mr Jawahar Goel, Head of Business, Dish TV, said Tata Sky's pricing needs more clarity and its content charges in future will have to be seen as it's among the highest in the industry.

HD services need a lot more bandwidth, but Mr Mehra says Tata Sky has the transponder capacity to handle HD services without dropping any existing channels.

Tata Sky launches 3 new features for PVR subs

Tata Sky, the joint venture between the Tata Group and Star, has launched three new features on its premium PVR (personal video recorder ) offering, Tata Sky+.

The features include True Video-on-Demand (TVoD) service, dual access remote recording and auto standby technology to save electricity. All three value addition features will be available to existing as well as new subscribers of Tata Sky+.

The TVoD service will help users to sample 45 hours of content, which will be updated on a regular basis, as per their convenience. This will include programmes, movies and documentaries with different genres like travel, comedy, drama and food and drinks.

The dual access remote recording service will be available by the end of this month. With this free of cost service, Tata Sky+ subscribers can use their mobile phones or internet to access their PVR set-top-box (STB) and record the programme.

Meanwhile, the auto standby technology will put the Tata Sky+ STB in sleep mode, whenever it is not is use, saving the electricity.

Tata Sky+, available for Rs 5,499, claims over 100,000 subscribers at present. The total subscriber base of Tata Sky is over 5 million.

“We have seen a significant jump in sales in this IPL season,” said Mr Vikram Mehra, chief marketing officer at Tata Sky. Being an unlisted company Tata Sky does not disclose its monthly growth figures, but Mr Mehra said the company subscriber base crossed the five million mark recently.

“We expect the momentum to continue mainly due to other sporting events such as the T-20 World Cup and the Fifa World Cup in the next 120 days,” Mr Mehra said.

Interestingly, Tata Sky also attributed the increased sales to the examination season. “We have seen over 50 per cent jump in sales of our Tata Sky Plus, which has a recording facility,” Mr Mehra said.

Tata Sky's research shows that parents have bought Tata Sky Plus to record the favourite programmes of their children during the examination season.

Users of the latest iteration of Mozilla’s open source browser can grab the bits and push their browser version all the way to 3.6.2. Softpedia readers have already been informed that Mozilla planned to skip 3.6.1 altogether, and, in this regard, the release of Firefox 3.6.2 should come as no surprise. But Mozilla did stray from its initial plans. The releases of Firefox 3.6.2, Firefox 3.5.9 and Firefox 3.0.19 were synchronized and planned for March 30. Because it needed to fix a security vulnerability in version 3.6, Mozilla is now offering 3.6.2 earlier to users.

“As part of Mozilla’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 3.6.2 has been released ahead of schedule and is now available as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux,” Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox, revealed.

Firefox 3.6.2 brings to the table a path for a Critical vulnerability disclosed by Evgeny Legerov of Intevydis. The flaw lay in a font decompression routine, Mozilla informed. “The WOFF [Web Open Font Format] decoder contains an integer overflow in a font decompression routine. This flaw could result in too small a memory buffer being allocated to store a downloadable font. An attacker could use this vulnerability to crash a victim's browser and execute arbitrary code on his/her system,” the browser maker said in a security advisory.

Interesting about this vulnerability is the fact that older versions of Firefox are not affected. The security flaw exists in a component introduced with the successor of Firefox 3.5. “Note: Support for the WOFF downloadable font format is new in Firefox 3.6; this vulnerability does not affect earlier versions of Firefox or other products built on the Mozilla browser engine,” Mozilla explained.

Firefox 3.6.2 was released in the second half of January 2010, with Legerov making public the WOFF heap corruption vulnerability about a month later. The flaw was included in the VulnDisco hacking tool, designed as an add-on to the Canvas penetration testing kit. Mozilla had to work extra to deal with the issue, since the flaw was unresponsively disclosed, gratuitously putting users at risk.

"If you already have Firefox 3.6 you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu," Beltzner added.

Something your VLC Player can do

 I've found quite Amazing tricks that one can use using VLC player. Just Try this :)

1. Rip DVDs: VLC includes a basic DVD ripper. You probably would never use it when there are better DVD rippers available, but it helps to know that you can in fact, get a decent quality DVD rip with VLC. To rip a movie follow these steps: Go to the Media menu and choose Convert/Save. Click on the Disc tab.

* Here you can adjust the Starting Position and rip only specific titles or chapters.
* Enter file name making sure to end with .MPG, and start ripping.
* Click Save.

2. Record videos: With the new VLC, you can record videos during playback. The record button is hidden by default. To see it, click on View>Advanced Control. The record button will now appear. Clicking on the button while playing a movie or video will start recording. Clicking again will stop recording.

3. Play RAR files: Do you know VLC can play videos zipped inside RAR files? They play like normal video files and you can even use the seek bar. If the RAR file is split into several files, no problem. Just load the first part (.part001.rar ) and it will automatically take the rest of the parts and play the whole file.

4. Play in ASCII mode: VLC media player has an amusing ability, to playback movies in ASCII art. To enable ASCII mode, open VLC media player and click on Tools>Preferences. Open the section ?Video? section and under ?Output? select ?Color ASCII art video output? from the drop down menu. Save it. Now play any video file to enjoy the ASCII art.

5. Listen to online radio: VLC includes hundreds of Shoutcast radio stations. You just need to enable it through Media>Services Discovery>Shoutcast radio listings. Now, open the Playlist and browse through the stations.

6. Convert Audio and Video formats: In VLC you can convert video and audio files from one format to another. Several different formats are supported like MP4, WMV, AVI, OGG, MP3 etc. To access the converter:

* Go to Media>Convert/Save.
* Load the file you want to convert using the Add button and click Convert.
* Now choose the output format and output file location.

7. Download YouTube and other online videos: First grab the URL of the YouTube video page. Now click on Media>Open Network stream. Paste the URL and click Play.

Once VLC starts streaming the video, click Tools>Codec Information and at the bottom of the window you will see a Location box. Copy the URL and paste it on your browser?s address bar. The browser will now download the file which you can save it to your hard disk. Alternatively, you can record the video.

5. Get a good antivirus program and keep it updated!

6. Don’t open or execute files that you are not 100% sure are absolutely safe nomatter where or how you get them.
7. Wipe your historyfiles (like cookies, internet history and temporary files, etc.), logs and personal files, with specific wiping program (like Eraser) instead of just deleting them.

8. Use encryption to enhance your privacy! Use encrypted email (like Hushmail or Ziplip) and encrypt sensitive files on your computer (PGP).

9. Don’t use public computers for anything you need to type in your logins, they usually have Trojan horses that capture your passwords.

10. Don’t assume anything. If you don’t know, find out! If you cant or don’t understand, ask someone who knows! There’s nothing more dangerous than doing something you don’t really know anything about. That’s the best way to cripple your system or get a Trojan horse on your computer!

Tata Sky aims to double subscriber base to 9million by 2012

Direct-to-home (DTH) player Tata Sky Ltd expects to double its subscriber base to nine million by 2012 as it plans add more interactive applications and television channels to its platform.

“We expect to double our subscriber base by 2012,” said Mr Vikram Kaushik, CEO, Tata Sky. The three-year-old DTH player had a subscriber base of 4.5 million as of November 2009.

Tata Sky is a joint venture between the Tata Group and Star. The Tata Group owns 70 per cent stake in the DTH player, while Star holds 20 per cent and the remaining 10 per cent is held by Temasek.

Mr Kaushik said the company plans to invest heavily in strengthening its customer service initiatives. SerWizSol, a Tata Group company, runs three call centres for Tata Sky across the country at Mohali, Pune and Hyderabad offering customer support in 11 languages.

Tata Sky recently added eight new channels including Discovery Science and Discovery Turbo to its platform increasing the total number of channels to 180. It also added two Bengali and two Marathi channels.

“There are hardly any popular channels that are not on our platform. The new channel addition will be driven by the customer demand,” Mr Kaushik said adding the company will focus on offering more and more interactive applications.

Currently, Tata Sky has some 10 interactive applications on its platform such as Actve Games, Actve Cooking and Actve Kids among others.

Tata Sky has already roped in over 70,000 subscribers for its Actve English, an interactive application that was launched in late December.

Tata Sky competes with players such as Dish TV and Sun Direct in a rapidly growing Indian market, where DTH penetration is less than a fifth of the television base of 13 crore.

RNCOS, a market research and information analysis firm, expects the DTH subscriber base in the country to grow at a compounded annual growth of 28 per cent in 2010-12.
